R ajgir just 15 kms from Nalanda is located the complex of temples and monasteries. The place is called Rajgir. It is one of the most important tourist places in India. Being located in a valley, Rajgir is a very scenic place. The small hill grit town is covered with lush green forest which add to the beauty of the place. Rajgir was the capital of the Magadh Mahajanpad (State) when Patliputra was not formed. In those days it was called Rajgrih. Rajgir or Rajgrih means the home of Royalty. This place has been associated with Lord Buddha and Buddhism. Buddha not only spent many years in Rajgir but also delivered sermons here and proselytized emperor Bimbisar at the Griddhakoota hill. History of Rajgir Mahotsav

The Rajgir Mahotsav (Festival), which was earlier known as Rajgir Nritaya (Dance) Mahotsav, was stated in 1986 in Rajgir . The then Chief Minister of Bihar, Bindeshwari Dubey had inaugurated the festival in Swarna Bhadar area (Rajgir) on April 4, 1986 in the presence of the then Union Tourism Minister H K L Bhagat and other dignitaries. The Tourism Department sponsored festival continued till 1989. It was not held for the subsequent four years before getting revived in 1994. Since then, it is an annual event in the calendar of Bihar Tourism Department. With a change in venue and the added color and development of the new tourist spots in the last few years, the festival has became a favorite event for domestic as well as foreign tourists. With the development of tourist spots, including Ghora Katora Dam, Pandu Pokhara etc., and the renovation of various pilgrim centers in and around Rajgir during last few years, the festival is now organised at a more accessible Qila Maidan in the

Jarasandha's Akhara

The epic Mahabharata calls it Girivraja and recount the story of its king, Jarasandha, and his battle with the Pandava brothers and their allies Krishna . Jarasandha who hailed from this place, had been defeated by Krishna 17 times. The 18th time Krishna left the battlefield without fighting. [2] Because of this Krishna is also called 'ranachorh' (one who has left the battlefield). [3] Mahabharata recounts a wrestling match between Bhima (one of the Pandavas) and Jarasandha, the then king of Magadha. Jarasandha was invincible as his body could rejoin any dismembered limbs. According to the legend, Bhim split Jarasandha into two and threw the two halves facing opposite to each other so that they could not join. There is a famous Jarasandha's Akhara (place where martial arts are practiced).
